The Story
Painted in 1990 (his late prime at age 81), Wonders of Cloudy Mountains grew from Lu Yanshao’s lifelong immersion in classical literati landscape and his perilous 1946 raft journey through the Yangtze Gorges, which forged his obsession with mist and moving water. Lu Yanshao was a master of modern Chinese landscape painting, celebrated for his unique brushstrokes and magnificent artistic style. Rooted in decades of sketching mist-shrouded peaks and roaring rivers, the work reflects Lu’s late-life synthesis of tradition and personal experience, channeling the grand, ethereal beauty of China’s mountain-cloud landscapes into his iconic style.The work achieves a perfect balance of solidity and emptiness, displaying magnificent momentum and the profound aesthetic of traditional Chinese literati landscape painting.
