The Story
Painted in 1990 when Lu was 81, Yannei Dansha reflects his late-career mastery, blending literati poetry with Daoist themes of transcendence and longevity.Executed at his Jiading “Wanqing Xuan” studio, the work merges his iconic cloud‑water technique with cinnabar accents, embodying his lifelong pursuit of poetic, ethereal landscapes. Lu Yanshao was a master of modern Chinese landscape painting, celebrated for his unique brushstrokes and magnificent artistic style. this work exemplifies Lu Yanshao’s late-period mastery. He employs his signature cloud-and-water brushwork (陆家云水), using vigorous, rhythmic central-stroke lines to define mist and flowing water. Layered ink washes (墨块) and strategic blank spaces (留白) create a profound sense of depth and ethereal atmosphere. Vivid touches of cinnabar red (丹砂) highlight mountain peaks and temples, piercing the mist to create a striking visual contrast.
