Inspired by Li Bai’s iconic poem Departing from the White Emperor City at Dawn, Qianli Jiangling Tu was rooted in Lu Yanshao’s perilous 1946 raft journey through the Three Gorges, which deeply shaped his lifelong obsession with river and cloud landscapes.Painted in his late prime (1980s), the work reflects Lu’s mature artistic synthesis—drawing on decades of sketching the Yangtze’s rapids and combining classical literati spirit with his personal experience of the river’s majestic power. Lu Yanshao was a master of modern Chinese landscape painting, celebrated for his unique brushstrokes and magnificent artistic style. Lu employs his signature "cloud‑water" brushwork, with vivid ink washes and flexible lines to capture the swift current and mist‑shrouded gorges of the Yangtze River. The highlight is its magnificent composition and rhythmic momentum, perfectly visualizing the heroic spirit of Li Bai’s poem while showcasing Lu’s highly personal landscape language.
Executed in ink and color on paper, the work merges bold 墨块 (ink washes) with rigorous lines to depict towering cliffs and surging waters, embodying Lu’s late‑career mastery of scale, rhythm, and the literati ideal of harmonious communion with nature.
