Fu first painted this subject in 1943, while living in Chongqing during the Sino-Japanese War. At the time, Japanese forces were advancing into Hunan, the land of the ancient Chu state. He created the work alongside his wife, deeply moved by the verse: "Gently the autumn breeze blows; leaves fall on Dongting Lake’s waves". Fu Baoshi skillfully blends his signature Baoshi Cun landscape brushwork with varied dry-wet ink contrasts, creating a poetic autumn scene of falling leaves and misty Dongting waves. With subtle soft color tones and the artistic idea of capturing spirit over mere form, the work perfectly conveys the goddess’s subtle melancholy and tender longing. This piece comes from a private Hong Kong collection and is accompanied by a collection certificate authenticated by the Art Research Institute.
Traditional Chinese ink wash on handmade xuan paper. Fu Baoshi uses his iconic "Baoshi Cun" dry-brush technique and varying ink tones to render the misty autumn scene and Lady Xiang’s flowing robes, finishing the work in one inspired sitting. The scroll is then traditionally silk-mounted by a master craftsman.

Fu Baoshi
Nanjing, China
One of the most important Chinese painters of the 20th century, Fu Baoshi revolutionized traditional landscape painting with his bold "scattered brush" (抱石皴) technique and poetic vision of mist-shrouded mountains.
