The Story
Fu Baoshi (1904–1965) was a revolutionary modern Chinese ink wash painter, famous for his dynamic, signature brushwork that redefined traditional landscape art. In 1960, he led a historic 23,000-li sketching tour across China to renew Chinese painting with real-life scenes. Pagoda Shadow and Bell Chime, finished in October 1960, is a key work from this journey, inspired by Yan’an’s iconic Pagoda Hill. Blending misty Loess Plateau scenery with poetic ancient verse, it uses Fu’s expressive style to merge traditional Chinese art with modern patriotic spirit, becoming a landmark of 20th-century Chinese painting. Traditional Chinese ink wash painting on handmade xuan paper. Fu Baoshi uses bold, moist brushstrokes and graded ink tones to portray misty mountains and the pagoda. Light ink creates hazy clouds, while dark ink defines rugged slopes, forming a vivid, poetic landscape in a single flowing composition. This work, from a private Hong Kong collection with a certificate, is a highly valuable masterpiece by Fu Baoshi with significant artistic and collection importance.
Craft & Process
This is a classic Chinese ink painting. Fu Baoshi used light ink for mist and dark ink for mountains, with freehand brushstrokes to create a vivid and elegant scene.
