Created in the 1930s, this Landscape with Sailing Boat is a product of Zhang Daqian’s deep study of Shi Tao, the great Qing-dynasty painter known for his expressive, free-spirited landscapes. Zhang was famously called “the reincarnation of Shi Tao” for his ability to capture the master’s essence, and this work is a perfect example of that skill. The painting depicts a quiet river scene: a winding stream flows past bare trees in the foreground, leading the eye to a misty river where a single sailboat glides toward distant mountains. The soft ink washes and subtle brushwork create a sense of depth and tranquility, while the calligraphy on the right echoes the poetic mood of the scene. For Zhang, imitating Shi Tao was not just a technical exercise—it was a way to connect with the literati tradition of expressing inner peace through nature. This work reflects Zhang’s early artistic philosophy: to learn from the past while adding his own voice. It remains a beloved example of his formative years, showcasing his mastery of ink painting and his deep respect for classical Chinese art.
Using delicate ink washes and expressive brushwork, the work blends Shi Tao’s style with Zhang’s own vision, capturing the serene beauty of the river landscape and the literati’s love of nature.
