Painted in 1945, shortly after Zhang Daqian returned from his three-year journey to copy murals at the Mogao Caves, Dongguan Puxue is a landmark work that reflects his deep absorption of Tang Dynasty mural aesthetics. Inspired by the snow-covered peaks of western China and the tranquil charm of southern rivers, the painting merges the bold, saturated colors of Dunhuang art with the refined poetry of classical Chinese landscape painting. The work depicts a serene scene: towering green mountains rise against a soft golden sky, while wispy clouds curl around the slopes. In the foreground, ancient pines stand tall, their dark ink strokes contrasting sharply with the bright mineral pigments. A scholar sits quietly in a small boat, drifting on the water, embodying the literati’s longing for peaceful seclusion and harmony with nature. The calligraphy inscribed on the right further enhances the mood, echoing the tranquil, meditative spirit of the scene. For Zhang, this painting was not just a technical experiment but a personal journey. It marked the beginning of his iconic “splashed-color” style, where he broke free from traditional ink-only landscapes to embrace rich, vibrant hues. Dongguan Puxue remains a beloved example of his middle period, showcasing how he wove together ancient traditions and his own artistic vision to create something entirely new.
Using rich mineral pigments, layered ink washes, and the influence of Dunhuang murals, the work blends bold color with delicate brushwork, celebrating the harmony of nature and the scholar’s tranquil spirit.
