This painting, titled The Auspicious Lotus (also known as Matrimonial Harmony), is one of Zhang Daqian’s beloved late-period lotus works, created in 1981 when he was refining his mature splashed-color style. The lotus, a recurring subject in his oeuvre, carries profound meaning in Chinese culture: it symbolizes purity, elegance, and harmony, and paired with the homophonic “couple” in its title, it represents a wish for happy and lasting marriage. Zhang Daqian painted this work with a delicate balance of bold washes and fine details. The large lotus leaves are rendered with loose, flowing strokes of mineral green ink, creating a misty, tranquil pond atmosphere, while the pink lotus flower is painted with careful, soft lines, its petals blushed with red to look lifelike and vibrant. The subtle goldfish swimming in the background add a sense of life and movement to the quiet scene. This piece reflects Zhang’s lifelong fascination with the lotus, which he once called “the flower of the gentleman”. It also shows his ability to blend traditional Chinese symbolism with his own innovative painting techniques, creating a work that is both deeply rooted in culture and universally admired for its serene, timeless beauty.
Using soft mineral washes and refined brushwork, the painting blends splashed-color techniques with symbolic meaning, celebrating the lotus’s grace and the ideal of harmonious union in Chinese culture.
