This masterpiece, Recreation of Dong Yuan’s Huayang Immortal Residence, was painted by Zhang Daqian in 1946, during a period when he deeply studied the classical landscape traditions of the Song and Yuan dynasties. As a lifelong admirer of ancient Chinese painting, Zhang drew inspiration from Dong Yuan, a Five Dynasties master known for his soft, atmospheric mountain scenes that defined the southern school of Chinese landscape art. At the time, Zhang was living in Sichuan, surrounded by the misty, lush mountains that echoed the landscapes of ancient literati paintings. He sought to blend the serene, poetic spirit of Dong Yuan’s work with his own evolving artistic voice, creating a scene that felt both timeless and deeply personal. The painting depicts a hidden mountain retreat, with cascading waterfalls winding through forested slopes, mist-shrouded peaks rising in the distance, and a quiet pavilion nestled among trees—a classic motif representing the scholar’s longing for seclusion and harmony with nature. Zhang poured meticulous care into every detail, from the delicate brushstrokes of the pine trees to the layered washes of mineral pigments that give the mountains their rich, verdant hue. This work is not merely a copy of an ancient painting, but a heartfelt dialogue with tradition. It reflects Zhang’s deep respect for classical art while showcasing his mastery of the blue-and-green landscape style, creating an idyllic world that invites viewers to escape into the quiet beauty of nature.
Using traditional blue-and-green mineral pigments and subtle ink washes, Zhang blends classical brushwork with personal vision, embodying the Chinese literati ideal of harmony between nature and the human spirit.
