Created in 1980, when Zhang Daqian was 82 years old, Homes at the Valley Mouth is a masterpiece of his late-period splash-color style. Living in his Taiwan home “Moye Jing She,” Zhang drew inspiration from Jin-Yuan poet Fang Hao’s verses about valley life, inscribing the poem directly on the painting. In this work, he blends traditional Chinese ink techniques with bold Western-inspired color washes. The mountains are rendered in vibrant shades of emerald and turquoise, creating a dreamlike, misty atmosphere. A waterfall cascades down the slopes, and faint pine trees dot the foreground, hinting at the “homes” hidden in the valley. For Zhang, this piece was more than a landscape; it was a poetic vision of peace and harmony, a wish for the natural beauty of his homeland. Today, it remains one of his most celebrated works, admired for its innovative style and profound connection to Chinese culture.
Combining traditional ink outlines with bold splash-color washes, the work blends East and West. It aims to capture the ethereal beauty of nature, expressing a poetic vision of peace and harmony in the hidden valley.
