This work is created by Wu Guanzhong, a modern Chinese master who blended traditional ink art with Western aesthetics. Born in Yixing, Jiangsu, Wu grew up surrounded by the misty water towns of the Jiangnan region, where clustered white-walled houses and black-tiled roofs became lifelong sources of inspiration. He painted this scene to capture the quiet rhythm of life by Taihu Lake, where houses crowd along the shore and boats drift across the calm water. Wu once said that these towns were his “spiritual home,” a place where the past and present coexist in soft, poetic harmony. Through his brush, he sought to preserve the fading charm of old Jiangnan, allowing viewers to feel the gentle breeze and tranquil atmosphere of these timeless water towns.
Using bold ink washes and simplified forms, the work balances abstraction and realism. It aims to convey the essence of Jiangnan’s beauty, blending traditional ink techniques with modern composition to evoke serene harmony.
