This work is created by Wu Guanzhong, a master of modern Chinese painting famous for blending traditional ink art with Western aesthetics. Born in Yixing, Jiangsu, Wu spent his childhood wandering the water towns south of the Yangtze River, where the white walls, black tiles, and winding alleys became the most tender memories in his heart. As he grew older, these hometown scenes never left his brush; he painted them repeatedly, not just to record the scenery, but to preserve the fading warmth of old Jiangnan. He once said that Jiangnan water towns were like his "spiritual home", a place where his brush and heart could rest. Even as he traveled around the world, the soft, misty charm of Jiangnan remained his most beloved subject, allowing viewers to feel the quiet poetry of traditional Chinese towns through his simple yet powerful brushstrokes.
Using traditional ink wash techniques, it employs minimal black, white and green tones to depict Jiangnan scenery. The work balances simplicity and vividness, aiming to convey the poetic, ethereal beauty of water towns and the harmony between man and nature.
