This painting is a quintessential example of Wu Changshuo’s mature flower-and-rock works. As a master of the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican period, Wu was famous for his bold, vigorous style influenced by seal script calligraphy. The narcissus flowers are rendered with bright green leaves and white petals with subtle yellow centers, while the rock is painted with thick, textured black ink strokes. The inscription on the right, written in Wu’s characteristic calligraphy, adds a poetic touch to the work. The title “冷艳捐二玉” refers to the pure, elegant beauty of the narcissus, often called “water immortal” in Chinese culture. For Wu, this work was not just a depiction of a flower; it was an expression of his admiration for the plant’s quiet strength and beauty, a common theme in his flower paintings.
The work uses calligraphic brushwork for the leaves and petals, paired with textured ink washes for the rock. The concept centers on capturing the elegant and resilient spirit of the narcissus, embodying Wu’s signature bold and expressive style.
