This painting is a quintessential example of Wu Changshuo’s mature lotus works. As a master of late Qing Dynasty and early Republican period literati painting, Wu was famous for his bold, vigorous style rooted in seal script calligraphy. The lotus leaf is rendered with broad, textured ink washes in deep green, while the flower blooms in vibrant red and pink hues. The calligraphic inscription on the left, written in Wu’s characteristic style, includes the title “秋光如许” (meaning “autumn light is just so”), adding a poetic touch to the work. The lotus, a traditional symbol of purity and resilience, is given new life through Wu’s dynamic brushwork. For Wu, this work was not just a depiction of a flower; it was an expression of his admiration for the plant’s quiet strength and beauty, capturing the vitality of the lotus in a single, timeless moment.
The work uses calligraphic brushwork for the leaf and petal forms, paired with rich, layered colors. The concept centers on capturing the elegant and resilient spirit of the lotus, embodying Wu’s signature bold and expressive style.
