Qi Baishi painted Yellow Flowers and Two Butterflies during his mature period, when his love for everyday nature shone through in every work. Inspired by the wild flowers and fluttering butterflies he observed in the fields and gardens, he created this piece to capture the gentle energy of spring and summer. The yellow flowers, painted with soft, rounded strokes, contrast beautifully with the dark green leaves, while the two black butterflies add a sense of movement and life. Qi often said that painting should “show the spirit, not just the form,” and here, he makes the butterflies feel as if they might flutter off the page at any moment. The calligraphy on the left, written in his bold, flowing style, completes the composition, adding both meaning and visual rhythm. For Qi, this work was not just a depiction of flowers and butterflies, but a celebration of the quiet beauty found in the natural world.
The work uses freehand brushwork for flowers and leaves, paired with bold ink strokes for the butterflies. The concept captures the lively harmony of nature, blending warm colors and dynamic forms to reflect the joy of everyday life.
