The Story
This painting is a quintessential example of Qi Baishi’s mature shrimp works. He spent decades observing and raising shrimp in his courtyard, refining his brushwork to capture their lifelike movements and transparent bodies. The four shrimp are rendered with bold black ink strokes for their heads and bodies, and delicate, flowing lines for their antennae and legs. The overlapping forms create a sense of depth and natural movement, as if the shrimp are swimming in clear water.
