The Story
Qi Baishi painted Wealth and Many Children in his later years, when he often created works celebrating happiness and good fortune. Inspired by traditional Chinese symbolism, the peony stands for wealth and nobility, while the chicks represent family harmony and many descendants. The inscription “Fu Gui Duo Zi” directly conveys the painting’s warm wishes for a prosperous, blessed life. Using his signature “red flower and black leaf” style, Qi rendered the peonies with bold, vibrant red ink, making them look full and alive. The chicks are painted with quick, simple strokes, yet they feel lively and innocent, showing his deep observation of nature. This work was not just an artistic creation, but a heartfelt gift for loved ones, expressing hopes for health, prosperity, and a large, happy family. Even in his old age, Qi loved painting flowers and animals, finding joy in their simple beauty.
