The Story

This painting is a quintessential example of Qi Baishi’s later-period peach works, created at the age of 93. The inscription “三千” refers to the legendary “Peaches of Immortality” from Chinese mythology, which ripen once every three thousand years and grant eternal life. The two peaches symbolize “double longevity,” a common theme in traditional Chinese art. The peaches are rendered with bright red and yellow ink washes, creating a soft, juicy appearance, while the basket and leaves are painted with bold, confident black brushstrokes. Qi’s signature style of combining simple, expressive forms with deep symbolic meaning shines through here. For him, this work was not just a still life, but a heartfelt blessing for health and long life, often given as a gift to elders and friends.

Craft & Process

The work uses bold, expressive ink washes for the peaches and calligraphic lines for the basket. The concept centers on traditional Chinese longevity symbolism, capturing the vitality of the peaches with simple, confident brushwork.
