Qi Baishi painted Lotus and Dragonfly at the age of 93, when his artistic style had reached its peak. Inspired by his lifelong love for nature, he often painted lotus ponds and the small creatures that lived in them. He once said, “The beauty of a painting lies in capturing the spirit, not just the form.” In this work, the lotus is rendered with bold, flowing red strokes, while the dragonfly is painted with extreme precision—its transparent wings, delicate legs, and slender body are all clearly visible. This contrast between the freehand flower and the meticulous insect perfectly shows Qi’s mastery of both styles. The simple composition, with just one flower and one dragonfly, creates a sense of calm and harmony, as if the viewer is standing by a quiet pond on a summer day. For Qi, this painting was not just a depiction of nature, but a celebration of life itself. Even in his old age, he continued to paint such scenes, finding endless inspiration in the small, beautiful details of the world around him.
The work uses freehand brushwork for the lotus and meticulous detail for the dragonfly. The concept celebrates the quiet beauty of nature, blending bold color and delicate precision to capture the essence of summer life.
