Qi Baishi painted Peaches of Longevity in his late years, when he often created works celebrating life and good fortune. Inspired by traditional Chinese symbolism, peaches represent immortality, while the “shoudai” birds symbolize longevity through a homophonic pun. The inscription “Duo Shou” (Many Long Lives) directly expresses the painting’s warm wishes. At 88 years old, Qi used mature brushwork to render the peaches with vibrant red and yellow hues, making them look plump and alive. The leaves are painted with bold, sweeping strokes, while the birds are detailed yet lively, showing his mastery of both freehand and meticulous styles. This work was not just a display of skill, but a heartfelt gift. Qi often gave such paintings to friends and family, hoping to share blessings of health and long life. Even in his old age, he kept painting peaches, finding joy in their bright colors and positive meaning. Today, Peaches of Longevity remains one of his most beloved works, admired for its simple beauty and warm, timeless message.
Qi uses freehand brushwork for peaches and leaves, paired with delicate strokes for the birds. The concept blends traditional longevity symbolism with folk-style colors, creating a vivid, auspicious work full of life and good wishes.
