Qi Baishi painted Red Lotus and Dragonfly as a tribute to the beauty of nature. The work is dedicated to a friend named “Jiru,” reflecting the custom of giving such paintings as gifts. In his later years, Qi loved painting lotus ponds, drawing inspiration from the rural landscapes of his childhood. The large, vibrant orange-red lotus leaf dominates the composition, painted with bold, sweeping strokes. The red lotus flower and seed pods add depth, while the tiny dragonfly, rendered with fine detail, brings the scene to life. The black ink stems and reeds are sketched with calligraphic lines, creating a sense of natural harmony. For Qi, this painting was more than just scenery. It was a celebration of life’s simple joys, blending the symbolic purity of the lotus with the lively energy of the dragonfly. Even in his old age, he continued to paint such scenes, finding endless inspiration in the natural world.
The work uses bold freehand brushwork for the lotus and meticulous detail for the dragonfly. The concept blends the symbolic purity of the lotus with Qi’s signature “red flower and black leaf” style, capturing the serene beauty of summer.
