Qi Baishi painted Red Leaves and Moth as part of his beloved Insects and Plants Album, inspired by memories of his childhood home in Hunan. The inscription “Outside the Maple Forest Pavilion” refers to a place he knew well, adding a personal, nostalgic touch to the work. The red maple leaves are rendered with quick, bold strokes, creating a sense of autumn warmth. The two moths, however, are painted with extreme precision—their wings, antennae, and delicate bodies are all clearly visible. This contrast between the freehand foliage and the meticulous insects perfectly shows Qi’s signature style. For Qi, this painting was more than just scenery. It was a tribute to the small, beautiful moments of nature he observed throughout his life. Even in his old age, he continued to paint such scenes, finding endless inspiration in the world around him.
The work combines freehand brushwork for maple leaves and meticulous detail for the moths. The concept blends personal nostalgia with traditional Chinese painting, capturing the quiet beauty of autumn with expressive simplicity.
