The Story
Qi Baishi painted Lotus Pond with Two Fish at the age of 93, when his artistic skills were at their peak. Inspired by the quiet beauty of rural ponds he remembered from childhood, he often returned to lotus and fish themes. The lotus symbolizes purity and elegance in Chinese culture, while the fish represent abundance and good fortune. In this work, the lotus leaves are rendered with broad, expressive gray and black ink strokes, creating a sense of volume and calm. The red lotus flower adds a striking focal point, and the two fish, painted with simple yet dynamic lines, seem to swim freely through the pond. The slender stems and reeds, sketched with confident calligraphic lines, complete the natural, harmonious scene. For Qi, this painting was more than just a depiction of nature; it was a celebration of life’s simple joys.
