Qi Baishi painted Lotus and Kingfisher to celebrate the quiet beauty of nature. Inspired by the lotus ponds he remembered from his rural childhood, he often returned to this theme in his later years. He once said, “Lotus symbolizes purity, and the kingfisher brings life to the still water.” In this work, the large lotus leaf is painted with broad, blue strokes, creating a sense of volume and calm. The delicate red lotus flower and slender stems contrast with the leaf, while the tiny kingfisher, rendered with fine detail, adds a lively focal point. The calligraphy on the left, written in Qi’s characteristic style, completes the composition, adding both meaning and visual rhythm. For Qi, this painting was more than just scenery. It was a meditation on harmony between stillness and movement, nature and life. Even in his old age, he continued to paint lotus ponds, finding endless inspiration in their simple, timeless beauty.
The work uses freehand brushwork for lotus leaves and flowers, paired with meticulous strokes for the kingfisher. The concept celebrates the harmony of nature, blending purity symbolism with Qi’s signature balance of boldness and precision.
