Created in his late years (1987), this work reflects Guan Shanyue’s mature Lingnan style and his artistic revival after decades of political constraints. Raised amid plum gardens and taught by his father to paint plums, Guan Shanyue later became a protégé of Lingnan master Gao Jianfu, forging his bold "Guan’s Plums" style. The painting features vigorous, forceful brushstrokes for plum branches and bright, vivid colours for blossoms, typical of the Lingnan School style. It combines freehand brushwork with meticulous detail, highlighting the plum’s vitality through bold composition and lively ink rendering. As a representative masterpiece of Guan Shanyue’s plum paintings, it carries remarkable collection value and profound cultural significance.
The painting employs vigorous, powerful brushstrokes to depict plum branches, showcasing superb traditional Chinese ink-wash techniques. Bright colours and freehand composition are skillfully blended, fully embodying the distinctive artistic features of the Lingnan School.
