The Story

Qi Baishi created this Great Garden painting to express his deep affection for the rural life he cherished. In his later years, living in Beijing, he often recalled the quiet gardens and farmhouses of his childhood in Hunan. These memories inspired him to paint simple, idyllic scenes that felt both familiar and peaceful. Unlike grand traditional landscapes, this work focuses on the warmth of everyday life: a small cottage nestled among trees, a winding path, and soft hills in the distance. The bold use of red and green reflects Qi’s signature style—vivid, folk-inspired colors that feel alive and joyful. The calligraphy “Great Garden” adds a personal touch, as if he is inviting viewers into his ideal world of quiet beauty. For Qi, this painting was more than just scenery; it was a celebration of simple joys. He often said that the most moving art comes from ordinary life. This work captures that spirit, blending nostalgia, nature, and his unique artistic voice into a single, heartfelt scene.

Craft & Process

Qi uses freehand brushwork and bold, folk-inspired colors to render the landscape. The concept centers on capturing the quiet charm of rural life, blending personal nostalgia with traditional Chinese painting’s harmony of ink, color, and calligraphy.
