Lin Fengmian (1900–1991), originally named Lin Fengming, was a foundational figure in 20th-century Chinese art. Born in Guangdong, he studied art in France and Germany (1919–1925), absorbing Impressionism and Fauvism.
Upon returning, he became Principal of the Beijing Art College and founded the Hangzhou National Art Academy (now China Academy of Art). He dedicated his life to blending Chinese ink traditions with Western modernism, creating unique works of figures, landscapes, and birds.
A pivotal educator, he mentored masters like Li Keran and Wu Guanzhong . Despite hardships, including imprisonment during the Cultural Revolution, he persisted. He settled in Hong Kong in his late years, leaving a lasting legacy as the "Father of Modern Chinese Painting"
